Ireland (2004) assessed 50 young male prisoners on an AM course and 37 control prisoners. found that 92% of prisoners showed an improvement in AM suggesting programmes are effective

3 stages:
skills and acquisition- new coping skills learned to help deal with anger provoking situations e.g. relaxation

cognitive preparation- identify situations that provoke anger, thought processes are challenged
crims seen to displace the blame onto the victim or another source other than themselves to justify offending

treatment option that helps the offender to develop their thoughts and feelings and how these influence their behaviour
