types and explanations of conformity
Compliance
‘goes along with’ and changes their public behaviour but not their private beliefs
a short term change in opinion or behaviour meaning that a particular opinion or behaviour will stop when group pressure stops
shallow level of conformity
result of normative social influence
Identification
adopt the views publicly and privately
because we value our social role as a member of that group
moderate level of conformity
attitudes and behaviours will be temporary and not maintained on leaving a particular group or social role
Internalisation
person changes both their public behaviour and their private beliefs as they genuinely accept the group’s norms
long term or even permanent change in belief or behaviour
deep level of conformity
Informational Social Influence (ISI)
they want to be right
They believe that other people have greater knowledge and are ‘right’
is where a person conforms to gain knowledge about how to behave in an ambiguous situation
cognitive because it relates to what we think or believe is right
leads to identification
Normative Social Influence (NSI)
because it is socially rewarding and/or to avoid social rejection
‘fitting in’ or ‘being the odd one out’
conforms in order to be accepted and to feel like they belong to a group
leads to compliance
