How are Living Things Related?
Conclusion
I learned a lot about the transition between water and land animals which was something I had been interested in before but never learned about.
I find the history of my family very interesting and it's something I really value.
Claim
All living things are related because they all came from a common ancestor billions of years ago. Life evolved from one point and has split off into many different species.
I am connecting it to my Anhalt family tree. Specifically to my dad's fathers side (Where the name Anhalt comes from).

Evidence 3: The History of Life
The earlier forms of life lived underwater and were very small. Little single-cell sea animals that eat chemicals called prokaryotes started using photosynthesis. This led to a big increase in oxygen levels. Eukaryotes had sex and started developing. This new way of reproducing allowed for much more diversity in the gene pool and allowed life to develop into more complex and unique things.
Adam was not the only Anhalt to move to the U.S. There were other Anhalts on the same ship as them but who were distantly related enough they barely knew each other. My great great grandfather was Martin who had a few children. My great grandfather John had two kids. And my grandpa Gene had three. Then its to my dad, who has me, Adam, and Isaac.
Evidence 1: What it Means to be Alive
I think most Anhalts are hard workers and love music. My brothers work really hard and are amazing at what they put their minds to. My parent both worked hard to get their degrees in college and I work hard at school, soccer, and fine arts.
For something to be alive, it has to meet some criteria. It must be made up of cells and then change and grow based on genetic instructions contained within those cells. It also has to balance inside conditions, maintain them, and get and use energy. A living thing also reproduces and reacts to its environment. To be alive, its species must adapt and change over time through evolution. Some living things don't meet all of the criteria but they are still alive because they meet most.
Evidence 4: Tiktaalik
All four-limbed animals share common features such as bone structure in limbs and a backbone. This is because we all evolved from a type of fish that slowly evolved to be able to live on land. We know this happened because there is clearly a time before animals lived on land. This is also proved by the fact that we have evidence of transition fossils that show traits of fish and land animals. These fossils show the early stages of the pattern of 1 bone, 2 bones, lots of bones, and then digits that all four-limbed animals share.
What has changed about Anhalts is before we lived in Germany all in one place. Now we are all spread out with just my line of family being in many many states. We also have decreased the number of children in a generation and moved from mostly farmers to mostly teachers.
Evidence 2: The Origins of Life
Life most likely first emerged around 3.8 billion years ago in a warm ocean with little oxygen. There are a few things that we think had to be in place for life to develop. Earth had to have complex chemical compounds (RNA & DNA) and there had to be just the right amount of energy. We also believe that liquid water was an important thing needed.
My line of family and comes from a region in Germany that historically was home to the Duchy of Anhalt. Adam Anhalt my great great great grandfather was who moved us to the U.S. He didn't want to have to go into the military as was required of sons of the Duchy. He move with his wife and two or three already born children. He had seven children.
