League of Nations (LON)
Ability to stop aggressor countires
- reluctant to stop trading with aggressor countries
- League did not have an army of its own
- Member countries concerned about the impact of economic sanctions
Membership of the League
- US Congress refused to allow United States to join the League
- USSR was not allowed to joined as it was communist
- US Congress refused to ratify the Treaty of Versailles
Ability to Achieve Disarmament
- member countries of the LON feared they would not be able to protect their territories & interests with disarmament

The Dawes Plan
- Represented by the US, Britain Italy and France
- Helped Germany’s economy recover from hyperinflation
- Restructure Germany’s reparation payments
- Removed French and Italian troops from German Ruhr Region
- US loaned Germany large sums of money to support its economy
The Kellog-Brian Pact
- Agreement between 65 nations not to use force to settle disputes
The Locarno Treaties
- Maintain peace in Europe among Germany, France, Italy, Britain and Belgium
- Reassured France
- Payed the way for Germany to join the LON
- Germany accepted its western borders
The Young Plan
- Sought to support Germany’s economy
- Aimed to reduced reparation payment and increased the duration of the reparation
- Plan bearly began when the the Great Depression in 1929 began
