Why is it used?
It used throughout the semester to determine if students understood the concepts and to guide future teaching by making adjustments to instruction.
Example: Dipstick (short Q&A), thumbs up/down, think-pair-share, entry-exit tickets

Summative (Vernon)

Why is it used? To give the parents, administrators, and the public readable evidence of student performance

Diagnostic (Jasmine)
What is it? - A diagnostic assessment is an evaluation of a child's knowledge and skill level of a certain topic. These assessments are done at the start of the topic to understand how much students already know about the subject.
Why is it used? - To find out where is student is at, so the teacher can make the lesson plan to suit the student.
Example: - Placement test, Pre-Course test, turn in art portfolio for fine art student.

Performance (Alysia)
What is it? A form of open-ended assessment in which students must demonstrate they acquired the necessary skills and higher order thinking by completing a certain task or assignment.
Why is it used? It is used as a way to include real-life application to assessments. It is also a great way to replace the typical multiple-choice tests and strengthen students' abilities over many different skills.
Example: research paper, student portfolio, science experiment, narrative essay, oral presentation

Assessment OF (Jasmine)
What is it? - Assessment of learning is also referred as Summative Assessment. It is an assessment done when the teacher is summing up the teaching.
The goal of Assessment of Learning is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.

Benefits of Assessments of Learning:
The most obvious benefit of Assessments of Learning is that they give definitive grades, this means that both the teacher and the student know exactly what level they are working at.
Example: Semester exam, district exam, term exam, end of unit test, final exam.

Assessment FOR (Vernon)
What is it? Is a type of assessment that Is used in the formative and diagnostic stages of learning. It measures learning in these areas.

Why is it used? To gauge student learning during the instruction period so teachers can adjust their presentations to better serve the students.
Assessment AS (Alysia)
What is it?
A method of assessment in which students assess and monitor their own learning, ask questions, select a useful cognitive strategy, and decide what they know to improve future performance and identify own strengths and weaknesses..
Why is it used?
It is used when teacher wants students to learn content more deeply and also to equip students with metacognitive strategies for how to learn more effectively. Can be used continuously throughout the school year. Emphasis on collaboration, reflection and self-evaluation.
Example: learning diary, lesson reflection, exam wrapper, peer/self assessment
