Why Local Government
We have a local government because we need a representative to help us with our daily needs and to collect taxes to pay for our expenditures by collecting property taxes and GST
How is the city dived elections
The city is divided into wards
What are the difference between Rural Government, Urban Government, Metis Settlement, and First Nation Reserves
Rural Government has their Top Elected Official titled as a Reeve, A reeve is the leader of a small town,
village or county.
Urban Government has their Top Elected Official titled as a Mayor, citizens can vote on their choice for mayor
directly.
First Nations have their Top Elected Official titled as a Chief
Metis have their Top Elected Official titled as a Chairperson
Municipal Services
Who ensures that these services are provided?
Our local government helps to make sure these services are provided, but we also have citizens and councils making sure these services are provided
What are some services local government provides?
Water sewer, garbage collection, city parks, fire prevention, roads and sidewalks, public transportation, building permits and zoning
Who are
the workers that complete the jobs?
Civil servants are people who are hired to run or work in the government departments
Revenue
Where does local government get its money (revenue)?
The local government collects taxes to get money to pay for services.
How is the money spent (expenditures)
The government spends money for local services and parks for their community
Jobs
What are some important jobs within the local government?
Some important jobs within the local government are the Mayor, Reeve, Councillor, Superintendent, Trustee, Civil servants, and City Manager.
What do the Mayor, Reeve, Councillor, Superintendent, Trustee, Civil servants, and City Manager do? :
The Mayor
The mayor gets voted on by citizens directly and represents citizens to speak on the citizens behalf
The Reeve
The reeve is a leader of a small town or village and helps them make the little changes that the town would like to make
The councillor
The councillor or councillors, help decide if a bylaw should be passed and help the government make decisions to help the community
The Superintendent
The superintendent is responsible for running the schools in a jurisdiction
The Trustee
The trustee is a person who serves on a school board and helps make the decisions they also help make the rules of the school, make decisions for services and programs, ect.
Civil Servants
Civil servants are people who are hired to help run the government and keep everything organized
City Manager
The city manager makes sure the decisions of the council are carried out
How can you participate
You can participate by joining a city council or starting a group in your community and discuss about issues in your community
Public Education
What are the different types of school boards?
French/Francoaphone Schools
French Schools are schools that teach french and help francaphones learn.
First Nation School
First Nation schools are schools that teach aboriginal kids and is ran by aboriginal peoples.
Privet Schools
Private schools are schools that only accept certain citizens
Charter Schools
Charter schools are like public schools but they focus on a certain subject such as sports, music, ELA, ect.
Public Schools
Public schools are available to all citizens and they are free of charge
Elections
How do we choose our city councillors?
The councillors are divided into wards and the candidate with the most votes is elected to be a council member.
How often?
Local elections occur every 3-4 years
Who is eligible to run for office and vote?
Anyone who is a Canadian citizens and over the age of 18 can run for any position in the office. You also have to live and work in the municipal area in which you are running for at least
six months before the election.
How do you get on the ballot?
First you have to be nominated by the citizens, this also means you have to complete official papers about you so citizens know if they want to vote for you
Bylaws
What are they
A bylaw is a law or reinforcement that the city makes to help keep citizens safe. If you don't follow a bylaw, then you could have a punishment, such as a fine or if it is a major crime, you could go to jail.
How do they get passed?
First you need to make a motion on weather the bylaw should continue for further voting, then people who oppose the bylaw have 3 chances to speak out and people who agree have 3 chances to approve of it
