Discrimination based on racial differences can lead to several outcomes, both in different societies or in the same society at different times: Enslavement of some outsiders, with control over their lives, work, and location, as well as the ability to exploit their labor. In order to coerce slave labor, punishments such as whipping, intimidation, threat of sale, restriction of social contact, and other forms of punishment were often used. It is, however, a common form of punishment in the military and several other industries to whip someone.
