Cardiovascular System Jazlynn Banuelos P.3
Major Components & Functions of Blood
ABO, Rh Blood Types
Major Functions of Cardiovascular System
Supply oxygen & nutrients to tissues by removing wastes from them
Arteries
Transport blood away from the heart
Capillaries
Vessels that run between arteries and veins
Veins
Transport blood toward the heart
Anatomy of the Heart
Layers of Heart
Epicardium
Function
a serous membrane made up of connective tissue and epithelium
Structure
decreases friction in the heart
Location
Outermost layer
Myocardium
Function
consists of cardiac muscle, and is the thickest layer of the heart wall
Structure
pumps blood out of heart chambers
Location
Middle layer
Endocardium
Function
made up of connective tissue and epithelium
Structure
continuous with the endothelium of major vessels joining the heart contains the Purkinje fibers
Location
Innermost layer
Cardiac cycle and the ECG
Cardiac Cycle
ECG
P Wave
QRS Complex
T Wave
Blood Flow through Heart & Body
Pulmonary circuit
Blood flow between heart and lungs
Blood comes into the right atrium from the body, moves into the right ventricle and is pushed into the pulmonary arteries in the lungs. After picking up oxygen, the blood travels back to the heart through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium
Systemic circuit
Blood flow between heart and body tissues
from the left ventricle to the aorta, through the structures of the body, to the superior or inferior vena cava, and reenters the heart in the right atrium.
Structural and functional differences between blood vessel types
Major blood vessels
Tricuspid Valve
Location
Opening between right atrium
and right ventricle
Function
Prevents blood from moving from the right ventricle into the right atrium during ventricular contraction
Pulmonary Valve
Location
Entrance to pulmonary trunk
Function
Prevents blood from moving from the pulmonary trunk into the right ventricle during ventricular relaxation
Bicuspid Valve
Location
Opening between left atrium
and left ventricle
Function
Prevents blood from moving from the left ventricle into the left atrium during ventricular contraction
Aortic valve
Location
Entrance to aorta
Function
Prevents blood from moving from the aorta into the left ventricle during ventricular relaxation
Vital signs
Disorders of the cardiovascular system
