My Best Friend Has Autism
" Brainstorming Session - 31.01.23
Patrick
I think we're still focusing too much of them as school students and not people.
Can we get an arcade?
Jack
Styrofoam Balls make horrible noises. There used for art.
Liam
They can meet over knowing that Cian likes drawing and Ruth likes photography.
One of the them is humiliated and the other notices and comforts them.
Ryan
Ruth being very organized makes her happy. Cian being very dis-organized drives her crazy.
Jude suggested we can show this through Art Direction / Their study rooms. Cian - Messy / Arty, and Ruth - Organized / Photography.
Ruari
If we're doing voice-overs / inner-monologues, it needs to be done regularly. It works well, we get an idea of their feelings because they can't verbally communicate their emotions and feelings correctly.
Ruth starts off not making direct eye contact with Ruth. But as they become closer friends, her eye contact get's better and better
Alek
Use inner-monologues when it is necessary.
Alek thinks we've moved too far away from Ruth having to go looking for Cian to save him. Good idea, but too far away from the original draft.
Going back to Liam's point - Ruth would need to be humiliated so Cian comforts her - This is more realistic.
Fintan
I like the idea of them seeing each other for the first time while looking across the canteen.
Jude
The two characters are the plot. They have their own challenges. They come into the film with their own struggles.
Jude's suggested ending is that they both overcome their struggles by the end by helping each other to show the depth of their struggles.
What struggle can Cian help Ruth overcome? What struggle can Ruth help Cian overcome?
Jude suggested that Cian can't read an important letter, so he scrunches up the paper and goes to a nosey place. Ruth finds that letter and see's it's important. She goes to the nosey place (Which causes her pain / discomfort) to find Cian and explain the important letter.
If we're going with sounds, build it up in stages. Stage One, two, three - three is the worst.
Cian needs to know Ruth's problems / what causes her pain
If going with the project, maybe start off with a conflict E.g. They don't want to work with each other and bond over drawing & photography.
They make the first connection in the canteen. Cian can't concentrate so he starts sketching on the page. The noise starts to irritate Ruth, so she tells him to stop.
