Andy learns about the man who really killed his wife and her lover, he asks for help. He tried to appeal his sentence but was unsuccessful.
Standing Up for Yourself

He took money from Warden Norton and put it into an account, this meant he had money for when he would escape.
He also left a note for the Warden which said "you were right, salvation lies within"

His independence doesn't stop him having friends, he can change the minds of his friends and has hope

Different to other prisoners - trustworthy, honest, believes in hope, stands up to people who are dishonest and bravely faces uncomfortable truths
Moving On
At roll call they notice Andy is missing. He has managed to escape from his cell and is now able to make his own choices.

Prisoners are stripped of their clothes and given their uniforms, another reminder they have lost their independence.
