Types of data

Takes less time to collect, no need to reinvent the wheel
Secondary data is convenient to collect, but it might not be specific to what the researcher needs

Case study
-
case studies often use qualitative methods, which expresses experience in words or less quantifiable forms.
Data can be historical, can include interviews, observations, or other data collection methods such as pscyhological tests
A weakness of case studies is that they often have small sample size or may be about a specific individual or event
Normally longitudinal, meaning they take place over an extended period of time to provide a stronger understanding of the picture
Observation
Observations can be covert, where participants are not aware the are being observed.
They can also be overt, where they do know they are being observed.
Covert bias may reduce changes in participant behavior. If Observation is covert, it must be done in a public place to be ethical.
observations can be done in a controlled setting, or a natural environment
Observations in a controlled setting may be less likely to be affected by participant bias and are easier to replicate.
However, observations in a natural setting are more ecologically valid.
-
-
Observations can include detailed summaries of behavior, summaries of specific categories of behavior, or quantitively measurements of behavior.
