Alfred Lord Tennyson (Poet)
Poems to compare
Remains
Similarities
Both show the reality of war vs what the propaganda shows- COTLB 'into the jaws of death, like signing up for the war was walking into the jaws of death, remains 'home on leave. But I blink' shows he cannot remove the image from his mind showing the reality of the effects war can leave you with
In both poems the soldiers are desensitised to war and will serve the military will blind obedience- COTLB 'someone had blundered' and 'we get sent out' shows how they do not question leaders orders they must do it even when they know it may be wrong
Differences
Remains shows the reality of the effects of war whereas COTLB glorifies the effects that these soldiers have made on society- COTLB 'when will their glory fade?', Remains 'end of story, except not really'
Memory is presented differently- Remains shows the memory as something which he will never and cannot forget, 'he's here is my head when I close my eyes', COTLB shows the memory as something valiant and honourable, 'Noble six hundred'
Bayonet Charge
Similarities
Both poets criticise the leaders within warfare- COTLB 'someone had blundered' and Bayonet Charge 'King, honour, human dignity, etcetera' he has lost everything he once fought for as everyone above him has forgotten about them
Both poets had fallen for the propaganda- bayonet charge 'patriotic tear', sees patriotism fade as the tear falls, COTLB 'into the jaws of death' ike signing up for the war was like walking into the jaws of death
Differences
COTLB focuses on the honour of the noble 600 whereas Bayonet Charge focuses on the futility of war
COTLB uses dactylic pentameter which glorifies the action of war whereas in Bayonet Charge a semantic field of words surrounding fear and pain are used to reveal the reality of war
Exposure
Similarities
Both poets are critical of the leaders- COTLB telling the reader to 'honour the light brigade' and not the leaders and Exposure 'worried by silence' like they have been left alone in the silence
Both poets use repetition to show the futility and repetitiveness of war- COTLB repetition of 'cannon' and 'six hundred' and Exposure repetition of 'nothing happens
Differences
Tennyson (COTLB) was poet Laureate at the time meaning he could not criticise the government so instead he tells the reader to 'honour' the people who have died
Tennyson (COTLB) criticises the rahs decision making of people in charge 'someone had blundered' whereas Owen (exposure) is tired of waiting in the trenches 'like a dull rumor of some other war', it feels distant
