Linguistics
I took the 220 class next semester
Which taught me the basics of linguistics, including phonetics, morphology, syntax, language acquisition, etc.
I took a little bit of ASL in high school as an extracurricular, so I had some idea of its grammar and how it differed from spoken English
English History
Mostly learned from 220, although there was a bit from high school
Going to an IB school did lead to a lot of British history being covered, but not much of Old English history
Studied Romeo & Juliet
Briefly touched on Beowulf
Social Factors
I started learning English around the same time I started learning Portuguese
This has led me to occasionally confuse grammar between both languages
Which becomes tricky considering one is synthetic and the other is analytic
This is because I primarily think in English
This is because I went to schools focused on the IB curriculum
This also led me to acquire trace amounts of British slang and pronunciations
Things like "it's calm" or "pressed"
Sometimes a slight Portuguese accent bleeds through certain words, usually those I am unfamiliar with
I was told after the covid lockdown that my accent became more pronounced due to months of speaking more Portuguese at home
This mostly showed through more voicing of the last phoneme in words, as most words in Portuguese end in vowels
I also live in the DMV area, which has influenced some pronunciations and some slang being acquired
People in my dorm have also influenced some slang, mostly Nick from Fall's 220
