From 1940 to 1944, Batista presided over Cuba as president. He won the election in 1940. After that, he was in charge of the nation from 1952 to 1959. He executed a coup in 1952. Despite his attempts to appease critics with a'show' election in 1954 where he ran without opposition, his authoritarian government at the time generated opposition. The entire coalition that had ousted President Gerardo Machado was part of the opposition. Batista was overthrown by Fidel Castro's guerrilla movement. The Cuban Revolution is what is known as this. On January 1, 1959, Batista escaped Cuba and traveled to the Dominican Republic, Portugal, and finally Spain, where he passed away in 1973 from a heart attack.
