Erikson's Psychosocial Stages
Basic trust vs. Mistrust
Ages birth - 1
Conflict: You are relying on people to meet all of your needs. Depending on your parents parenting style will determine if the child's confidence that the world is a good place. The more conforting the parents are, the sooner that will happen for the child.
Generativity vs. Stagnation
Age: Middle Adulthood
Conflict: contribute to next generation through child rearing or productive work versus absence or meaningful accomplishment. During this stage people need to feel like they are making a difference in our world by either starting a family or contributing something amazing to our society. If humans are not able to do these things, they will start to feel an absence of meaningfulness or accomplishment in their lives.
Identity vs. Role confusion
Age: Adolescence
Conflict: "Who Am I?" - values and vocational goals. A child is growing into an adult and there are a lot of questions about life. If these questions come with negative outcomes, there will be a lot of confusion about their adult roles from the children.
Initiative vs. Guilt
Ages 3 - 6
Conflict: There is a wide social circle requiring purposeful behavior. Children start to develop their sense of ambition, but that is when their sense of purpose is supported. This can be a problem when a child has too much self-control but that will lead to guilt.
Integrity vs. Despair
Age: Late Adulthood
Conflict:
Intimacy vs. Isolation
Age: Early Adulthood
Conflict: The difference between forming healthy intimate relationships versus the inability to form close relationships due to earlier disappointments. When a child doesn't have great relationships at the beginning of their life, that will harm the rest of the connections that they try to make in their life later on.
Autonomy vs. Shame/Doubt
Ages 1 - 3
Conflict: They are asserting their independence. Their bad behavior will get punished and with that will come feelings of shame or doubt when being scolded.
Industry vs. Inferiority
Ages 6 - 11
Conflict: Master Knowledge. They are starting to go to school and learn about the world around them. But when learning comes with a negative outcome, there will be inferiority and incompetence.
