Cyber Bullying in Middle Childhood
"Children have a greater chance of reaching their potential when they have access an opportunity to engage in stimulating environments, experiences, and interactions that support and promote their individual capacities and capabilities" (Mah, 2012, p. 81)
encouraging participation in positive peer interactions allow children to gain a sense of accomplishment and self confidence (Mah, 2012, p. 82)
"Positive peer relationships improve their overall well-being and practical abilities" (Mah, 2012. p.82)
Definition:
"characterized by aggressive, repeated, and intentional acts that involve an impalance of power between victim and perpareator" (Holfeld, 2014, p. 116)

Cyber Bullying:
transmitted anonymously and reach victimized children and adolescents day or night, at home or at school
NOT associated w/ aggression
Eg; Being angry, getting into fights
viewed as less severe and just a loss of emotional control
Statistics
girls are more likely to experience cyber victimization
Girls use social media and technology to more connect with their friends
Boys are more likely to report cyber bullying
Shy or quiet students are often victimized
Weight, race, ethnicity are all factors
Behaviours:
Children endorse cyber bullying behavoiurs that reflect joking around or making fun of others
for them, saying "just kidding" eliminates any bullying they have done
"aggressive" behaviour such as spreading rumours or posting embarassing/private pictures are not as common
When being bullied it can cause hits to self-esteem
Middle Childhood
Children likely have not mastered the ability to take the perspective of others
can often struggle with hypothetical or abstract concepts
better able to control their own emotions and communicate
understand appropriate displays of emotion in society
learn that it is not appropriate to use physical aggression when angry
