Climate Change Mitigations
Replacing fossil fuels
in 2018 90% of europes new energy sources were renewable
wind, solar, biomass and hydro power made up 86% of the energy infrastructure built
wind accounted for more than half of the capacity installed, which helped wind power overtake coal, to become the continents second most popular energy source
clean energy still makes up a small portion of Eur total power, numbers are gowing as coal plants close
few countries have policies in place to sustain clean energy development pase 2020
solar power
uses thermal panels to heat water for buildings
photovoltaic panels to convert sunlight into electrical energy
wind power
windmills have been used historically to pump water or drive mechanical machinery
wind turbines usually have fewer blades than the traditional windmill meaning that they require stronger winds to get started
in northern hemisphere countries such as the UK, higher energy demand in the winter months is matched by more windy days and higher wind speeds
hydropower
currently the most used renewable source of energy
energy obtained from the movement of water has historically been used to drive a variety of machinery e.g. grinding flour, sawing wood
geothermal energy
uses heat from the interior of the earth to heat buildings or generate electricity
Reduce energy use
modernised lifestyle consume large amounts of fossilfuels e.g. motorised transportation
education campaigns on ways to reduce emergy consumption
install recharging stations so people can make the choice to switch to electric cars
increase the use of renewable energy cources in electricity generation making electric cars more effective
introduce legislation for emission control technologies on vehicles to reduce the level of GHG emission
goverments can also use economic incentives
charging companies that emit pollution, encourages a reduction in emission levels
useing carbon emission cap and trade schemes and carbon offsetting
using subsidies to encourage new technologies and support research into more efficient methods reducing GHG emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels
awarding subsidies or tax credits to promote renewables sources of energy for industry and domestic users
sunsidising public transport
using road tolls and parking charges to discourage the use of cars
creating incentive schemes to encourage people to practice shared car use
Reducing emissions from agriculture
using less fertiliser can reduce nitos oxide emissions
adding nitrfication inhibitors to fertiliser reduces nitrous oxide production
reducing methane generation from livestock by selective breeding to have cattle thta produce less methane and changing the feedstock
collecting and utilising methane emissions from biodegradation of animal waste as a source of energy
cultivating rice varieties that can be grown in drier conditions with higher yields to reduce methane emissions
Reducing emissions from transport
road transport is a major source of GHGs, can be reduced by replacing petrol or diesel vehicles with electric or hybrid vehicles or biofuels
international agreement set goals that are adopted into national policies
legislation can be used to set stringent emission standards for industry power generatoin and vehicles
some ountries have vehicle emissions standards that must be met before new vehicles can be sold
planning regulations can promote alternatives to private car use e.g. cylce paths
disencourase motor vehicles
encouragement of bikes
tax motor vehicle usage
benifit for electric car users
alternative fuel for aviaioin
provide support for research
CCS
carbon capture
afforestation
conservation of forests
designation areas as national reserves/parks
technologies
Energy policies
taxes
carbon subsidies
Raise awareness
indicisual carbon footprint
universities offering more cources on these
Research and development
Pledges to goals and
e.g. carbon trading schemes
Divestments
withdrawing funding from climate change causing sectors
