Summative Assessments
are intended to evaluate students' learning by measuring their accomplishments against the standards. Summative is often used at the completion of an instructional unit or course.
-
-
Assessment for Learning
is assessment that is used by teachers to evaluate the efficacy of their instruction. The focus, in this case, is on the method and how to improve it for better outcomes. This would ideally fall under formative assessment as the stakes are lower, but summative assessment can at least provide feedback involving overall improvement or decline.
-
-
Assessment as Learning
involves students assessing themselves and what they are learning. It is a student-centered approach. Students have creative control over how they demonstrate their learning. They also try to explore the different ways in which they can learn.
-
-
Assessment of Learning
is testing as we would traditionally think of it. Students will have been (hopefully) taught something over a period of time and at the end of this time they are tested to see what they know. It has value in providing feedback about eventual efficacy of teaching and assessing student levels.
Examples:
Final Exams
Standardized Tests
SAT/GRE, etc.
-
Formative Assessments
Formative Assessment is diagnostic rather than evaluative. It is used to assess a student's learning style and ability, to provide ongoing feedback, and to allow educators to improve and adjust their teaching methods, as well as for students to improve their learning.
