How will I identify and assist a struggling student in my classroom?
Step 2
Assessments for when a struggling child is identified
Contact the parents to discuss what I am seeing in the classroom. Do they notice these behaviors at home?
Pinpoint when the behaviors are occurring. Is it during a specific subject, activity, or occurring all day? Is it only when working with a specific adult or student?
Plan a meeting with school support staff (counselors, therapists, teachers, administration) to discuss what is going on in the classroom. Is this child eligible to receive special education support?
Does this child have any known diagnoses? Learning, physical, emotional or otherwise?
Does this child already have an IEP in place?
Step 3
Get a team together to evaluate for an IEP and possible disability
Does this child have an undiagnosed disability that falls under IDEA? If yes, an IEP needs to be formed for this student
Meet with school staff and the parents to discuss possible IEP and disability. Meet again with parents after an IEP has been made to discuss goals for the student, progress, hopes, concerns, and difficulties
What intervention has this student been missing? Do they need a one on one aid, a communication device, glasses, hearing aids, emotional behavioral assisstance?
Would this student benefit from physical, occupational, or speech and language therapy? If yes, then coordinate with school's therapists
Step 4
What differentiated instruction will I implement to help this student thrive?
Offer sensory help such as headphones
Create a designated break area
Remember the specific interests of the students- how will I incorporate these into activities?
Coordinate with therapists and resource teachers to accommodate all of the IEP's goals
Offer more time to complete work, take tests, alter lesson plans for better comprehension
More one-on-one time with this student to form a stronger relationship and foster trust
Add more visuals
Step 1
What are the signs that a student is struggling?
Hyperfixation on objects, topics, people
Unable to grasp and understand new topics and lessons
Low frustration tolerance
Unable to form meaningful friendships with peers
Showing a lack of interest in learning new topics and a dislike for school
Inability to communicate one's feelings, emotions, thoughts properly
Aggressive physical behavior
