Chapter 20 - Electric Charge, Force and Electric Fields
20.1 - Electric Charge
Electric Charge: Property of the electrons, protons and uncharged neutrons that make up matter.
-
Charge cannot be created nor destroyed; it can only be transferred from place to place, from one object to another.
Electric Force: Forces on two interacting objects that acts without physical contact between the two objects
Attractive: Opposite type of charge exists on two interacting objects.
Repulsive: Same type of charge exists on two interacting objects.
-
Structure of the Atom: Matter is composed of particles called atoms. Atoms have positive and negatively charged particles.
Protons: Positively charged particle. Located inside the nucleus and cannot leave nucleus. Mass: 1.67262192 × 10-27 kilograms
-
Electrons: Negatively charged particle. Located outside of the nucleus and can transfer to other atoms. Mass: 9.1093837 x 10-31 kilograms
