Family performs functions to keep society running smoothly. Families consist of an instrumental role and an expressive role which creates the division of labour

Criticised by conflict theories as families are not perfect for everyone due to negative experiences and could cause stress rather than relief (SOAP)
Feminists argue families largely exist for the benefit of men to maintain a patriarchal society
Argue if the roles in society benefit the powerful groups within it rather than as a whole.

Nuclear families can be said to be universal as most countries and cultures raise their children within their own household.

the type of family that 'fits' the society and the functions it performs changes. Movement from pre-industrial to industrial means extended family isn't dominant
