milgram (1963) baseline study
aim
to investigate if the obedience displayed in the Holocaust by the Germans could happen everywhere, specifically New Haven in America using electrical shocks.
procedure
all from New Haven, America
picked names out of a rigged hat, pp always the teacher
40 men aged 20-50
instructed by the experimenter to elicit an electric shock (15v) for every incorrect word recall, progressively going up for every wrong word recall
pp had a 45v test shock to add to the real effect
Mr Wallace (the learner) behind a window and after 315v he knocked on the window and went quiet
verbal prods 4 to make the pp carry on
findings and conclusion
100% went to 300V
pp were observed to: tremble, sweat, bite their lips, dig fingernails into flesh
65% went to maximum of 450V
35% nervous laughter
3 had seizures
conclusion: the findings show that ordinary Americans are surprisingly obedient to legitimate authority
evaluation
W- lab experiment, not natural, low eco validity and mundane realism
W- ethical issues, protection of pp
S- standardised procedure, replicable
S- sample represented the initial aim, wanted to test German's obedience and sample represent general recruiters
W- small amount of pp, 40 and all from New Haven, unrepresentative
S- lab experiment, controlled variables
