CHAPTER TWO:
Mesopotamia and the Fertile Crescent
2.1 The Geography
Tigris and Euphrates
Rivers in Southwest Asia. Start from: Mountains of what are now Turkey and Kurdistan. Flow through Iraq and head southeast to the Persian Gulf.
Mesopotamia:
The region where these two rivers flow is called Mesopotamia: "land between the rivers."
Landscape: Mostly flat but with small, scrubby plants.
Uses:
Provided water and means of travel.
In ancient times, it was easier to travel by boat than over land. 1.Boats can carry loads. 2. river currents can help. 3. Few roads existed.
Fertile Soil.
Rain and melting snow in the mountains caused the rivers to swell-------Pick up soil as flowing down------water overflowed onto the floodplain------soil it carried settled on land. Fine soil deposited:
silt
:
good for grow crops even in the
Arid Climate.
Floods and Droughts:
In arid region (Mesopotamia): drought = constant danger. Level of Tigris and Euphrates would drop----no water for crops-----crops failed-----people starved.
Yearly floods: unpredictable. Depended on how much snow melted in the mountains and how much rainfell.
Irrigation:
6000 BC. People take steps to control water supply.
Built earthen walls along the riverbanks to hold back excess water during floods.
Built canals to carry water from the rivers to fields.
Challenge: Keep the canals clean. (Silt clogged the canals)
