Where, What and When:
Where: a city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
What: A Union Carbide Cyanide India Limited pesticide plant accidentally released a deadly chemical fog.
When: 3rd December 1984.
Cause:
Substandard operating and safety procedures at the understaffed plant.
Impacts:
Killed 15-20 thousand people immediately.
Created panic.
People attempted to flee Bhopal.
Survivors suffered respiratory problems, eye irritation or blindness, and other maladies resulting from exposure to the toxic gas.
Many were awarded compensation of a few hundred dollars.
More than 400 tons of industrial waste is still present on the site.
Soil and water contamination.
Chronic health problems.
High instances of birth defects in the area's inhabitants.
Groundwater contamination.
