In Unit 1, the interesting topic was lipids, specifically fats. I consume lipids on a daily basis, however, I often avoid them entirely. Previously to this course, I had always believed that all fats were unhealthy for my body. I've always thought that eliminating fatty foods, whether healthy or bad, would make my body healthier. I used to steam or boil my meals, but I don't think I ever followed a proper diet because I didn't really know the importance of fats for my body. After studying lipids and fats in this unit, I realised that my body requires all nutrients, including fats. I now know the difference between healthy (unsaturated) and bad (saturated) fats. I know that these two have comparable qualities, but their chemical bonds are very different. They are both composed of carbon and hydrogen, but the single bond in saturated fats and the double bond in unsaturated fats differentiates them. Additionally, I am aware that saturated fats are dangerous because they cause high cholesterol, weight gain, and other diseases, while unsaturated fats provide energy and assist in the functioning of my body. I realised that one of the reasons I'm usually tired is that I don't eat carbs, sugars, or fats; instead, I replaced them all with proteins, unaware of the fact that my body needs all of these nutrients to function correctly.
