Biological rhythms
Circadian Rhythms
Sleep/wake cycle:
the effect of daylight. An important exogenous zeitgeber on our sleep wake cycle, many people have researched what would happen to our internal body clock if left to its own devices -free running-
Siffre's cave study:
Siffre remained in a cave with no natural stimuli like light or noise, to see the effect on his biological rhythms. He resurfaced mid September and believed that it was mid August. His sleep wake cycle has increased to 25 hours instead of 24
Biological Rhythms:
biological rhythms are governed by two things
- internal body clock -Endogenous pacemakers-
- Extrernal changes - Exogenous Zeitgebers-
Some rhythms complete in one day -ultradian rhythms- and some take longer to complete -infradian rhythms-
Other Research:
Aschoff and Wever, pps spent 4 weeks in a WWII bunker all but one participant -who's sleep wake cycle extended to 29 hours- displayed between 24 and 25 hours. both studies show that the natural sleep wake cycle is longer than 24 hours.
