Sentencing
Discharge
Issued if guilty of a minor crime and decision is to not punish at the time. An absolute discharge means no actions are taken. A conditional discharge means the offender won't be punished unless they commit another offence within a set period of time.
Fine
Most common criminal sentence. Usually given for less serious crimes such as driving offences, minor theft or criminal damage.Amount of fine is proportional to the severity or seriousness of the crime and the offender's ability to pay.
Community Service
Sets out conditions that an offender must fulfill in a set period of time. The objective is to punish them while making efforts towards rehabilitation and preventing reoffending.
Prison (Custodial)
Given when the court believes that the public must be protected from the offender. Determined or indeterminate sentences are issued.
Suspended
A first-time offender may receive this. They may not go to prison if they do not reoffend and if they follow orders (similar to community sentence). If they break these rules, they will likely be sent to prison.
