Fungi & Mycoses
Characteristics
-
-
The "body" of fungi may be unicellular yeasts or multicellular molds (which are made of microscopic threads called hyphae)
-
Have membanes with ergosterol, which is unique to fungi (they also have a unique tubule protein
They are Heterotrophic (Not photosynthetic, they have to "eat" by digesting using exoenzymes outside the cell, then ingesting)
Dimorphism
Many pathological fungi form molds at ambient temperature, but yeasts at body temp
Diagnosis of Mycoses

Serology
-
Difficult to do becase we are exposed to all kinds all the time - gotta differentiate endemic exposure vs infection
