a rigid class system and intricate social hierarchy meant that people, particularly those in the upper echelons of society, valued their titles highly
This explains partly why Macbeth takes it incredibly seriously when he is told he is to become Thane of Cawdor
many of the characters in the play are keen to increase their social standing, this is where a lot of the tension is caused
