Difference Between Interpretation and Translation
Five key difference
Spoken versus written
Interpretation is the transference of meaning between spoken
languages
translation is the transference of meaning between written languages.
Real time versus delayed
Interpreting occurs in real time.
translator has time to access resources
Level of accuracy
translators have time to evaluate and revise
interpreters aim to be completely accurate
Direction and fluency
interpreter must be fluent enough in both languages
translators do not have to be as fluent in the source language

interpreters must also capture tone, inflection and voice quality

Types of Interpretation
Simultaneous
Listen to the spoken, and speaks the translated words.
Consecutive
The speaker stops frequently (1 to 5 minutes).
Whispered
The interpreter sits next to a small target-language audience and whispers a simultaneous interpretation.
Relay
A SL interpreter expresses the message to a group of interpreters who have a language in common and each speaks another languages as well.
Liaison
An interpreter translates into and out of the source and target languages as a conversation takes places.

Familiar with the general subject of the spoken language
Intimately familiar with the cultures
Extensive vocabulary
Expresses thoughts clearly
Excellent note-taking skills
Quick decision making skills
