Evolution
Vocab
-
natural selection: the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.
antibiotic resistance is the ability of bacteria and other microorganisms to resist the effects of an antibiotic to which they were once sensitive.
-
mutation: a mistake or a change in a living thing's DNA that can effect them in many ways, good and bad.
Evolution: the theory that all the kinds of living things that exist today developed from earlier types.
Examples
Charles darwin studies finches in the galapagos. He notice that on each island the finches looked different, specifically in their beaks. This is because over time the finches adapted to their different resources and food sources.
Humans can have a disease called sickle cell anemia. Sickle cell anemia is when red blood cells start to deteriorate over time. Yes this can be a problem, but in some cases it is extremely helpful. If you get malaria and you have sickle cell anemia your chances of dying are much lower. This is because the malarial infection has less red blood cells to stick itself to .
Charles darwin studied beetles. He found that they showed evolution by how over time each beetle started to gain and lose features to be better fit into the environment.
giraffes necks have grown over time to reach taller trees, therefore giving them more food. This proves darwin's theory
correct because the giraffe cant just stretch its neck a lot all at once
Land Mammals appeared first, they evolved into the sea animals. We know this because in the video it shows the paraxonians (hoofed land mammals) evolve all the way to modern day whales. We also know this because the animals are more likely to adapt and lose features such as limbs, than to adapt and gain features. We can see many similarities in the skeletons but most of the similarities resemble land animals.

Extinction
-
endangered species: species with an extremely low population and that are very close to becoming extinct.
Ammonites were marine animals belonging to the phylum Mollusca and the class Cephalopoda. They had a coiled external shell similar to the modern nautilus shell.
A mass extinction event is when species vanish much faster than they are replaced. The world has gone through 5 mass extinctions. Scientists belive that humans are causing a sixth mass extinction.

Evidence
In embryological development you can notice that all embryos look similar. This is because they all started with one common ancestor. In the early stages embryos all have a head with an eye and spinal column. During the middle stages, most of the embryos still look similar but they are starting to slightly change. During the final stage of maturity, you can see many different changes in the embryos structure. This proves that things evolve because it shows that similar things can turn into different things.
-
Many bone structures look very similar to each other. this helps prove the theory of evolution because there is a high possibility that they all have a common ancestor
-
Fossils have shown evolution over many millions of years. For example, the oldest human like fossil (Lucy) has a resemblance of a human but at the same time looks completely different.
Theories of evolution
Lamark:
Lamarck claimed that organisms changed how they behaved in response to environmental change. Their altered behavior caused their organs to undergo modification, which their progeny inherited. This was eventually proved to be wrong.
Darwin:
Darwin claimed that all species share a common origin, that species can change through time, and that new species develop from existing ones. According to this theory, each species has a distinct set of heritable (genetic) differences from the common ancestor that have developed gradually over extremely long time periods.
