INUIT RESEARCH ECONOMY
What does this even mean?
Is this even a thing?
Large scale investments?
If a research program gives out 1M, how much of that money is being spent in IN? Purchases in South, no actual economic contribution in IN?
Minute level, what one individual impact is on research
Capacity building
Granting opportunities - this is a huge shift in mid 90s, towards funding available for Arctic research
What pushed/drove this change? What contributed to this success/lack of success? From a National perspective - why so much?
What has impacted the investment in this? We are not really interested in the "stormtrooper approach" anymore.
EX. Northern Contaminants - 10M to 5M, why is it still going?
Is it more than money?? Knowledge or information as opposed to money. Lots of interest in that information - and thus more money, secondary benefit.
When we say research economy are we talking economics, economy in a more abstract sense about research? The "environment" is healthier than it used to be. Inuvik wetlab, testing infrastructure - infrastructure and capacity as necessary/important to retain monetary value.
Purpose How will we Use This?
Information as wealth.
Positions/employment
An exercise to understand what economic benefits that might come from research
What would it mean to be more deliberate/intentional to create research as an "enterprise"
We know that it exists, we know funds are allocated to go get this information, staffing is increasing, but we also know that economy is not important as an indicator of economic success (is the scale too small?)
Exploratory - to answer what questions (hehe)
Putting investments into Inuit-led endeavors, where would we like to go with that.
What is necessary to create a sustainable research economy for Inuit?
What is the social enterprise that comes with research??
How can research provide more benefits via economic or knowledge wealth for the communities involved?
What happens before getting involved in policy? Where is that money spent and what benefits do Inuit gain from it?
If NSERC just built houses instead of whatever the heck they do
IDEAL vs REALITY
Case Studies and Successes as Evidence for Advocacy
NCP, QNIHS, IQP, IRN
Asking the right questions that communities want answered?
Is there a way we can be pushing for something not generic? Research can be a tool of self-determination.
We spend XXX on research and only X is used
Should the focus of research policy and advocacy be on better, more intentional, ethical research? The economic part is either so far-future or very individual - not appropriate for a national scale. Economics are perhaps the not correct thing to focus on in terms of economic improvement.

Policy justified
Ultimately capacity comes from education, and Inuit researchers. INU, etc.
If researchers who are getting paid live in IN, the economic impact is greater in IN

Infrastructure
Evaluating research outcomes not in dollars to Inuit, but in these positive outcomes
Limiting factors to success
How do we determine priorities and support as defined by Inuit and communities/regions
The positivitization of "research"
Ideological Shift, change of research from negative to a tool for self-determination. Why? What happened? How do we continue this trend?
What do Inuit want out of research?
What is a positive, influential system that is beneficial for careers, general well-being and agency?
Intended outcomes and indicators for Inuit-led research - what is good research?
Succinct summary of current arctic research - focus on Inuit programs, etc.
Summary of current programs, etc. For opportunity development. Agreed upon direction of NISR Implementation tasks.

WHAT IS THE FUTURE STATE OF ARCTIC RESEARCH?
ArcticNet Sunsetting, CINUK limited timeline. No long term federal vision - how do we sustain this, maintain growth instead of short term cyclical funding. Programs ending, so what next??
Can ITK advocate for a cohesive future? Advocacy for research programs to continue, etc.
