Planning for Design Development
WHAT?
is the cost of the product?
£20 to £25
are the best colour combinations?
pastel pink and pastel blue, blues, greens and gold/sand
are the best materials to use
hemp
most environmentally friendly as it has low carbon emissions and is biodegradable
it is considered more environmentally friendly than cotton!
velvet
all materials are sourced from local companies, so maintains carbon emissions to a minimum
cotton
are the patterns used?
waves, palm trees, cherries, shells, sun, umberllas
are all my design techniques
CAD embrodiery
sewing
printing
final changes need to be made
for mix&match design 6 - i would like to add shells beneath the palm trees embroidered on the design.
change colour of the sea (pattern on other side of pillow) to a lighter blue
add popper button to the ends of the neck pillow
additions benefit the design the most
the mini alarm clock in the side of the neck pillow
popper button so the neck pillow can be secured around the neck
the hook at the top of the neck pillow, to help transport it around, and be hands free
zip - found on the back edge of the design, which allows the cover to be removed.
additions could be hazardous
none of the additions made to my design e.g. alarm clock, hook, zip and popper button; would be hazardous, as the design does not contain any loose parts. the additions made to my design, will not harm the user.
is the size of the design?
length = 32cm, width = 35cm
one size fits all, as stretchy and flexible
HOW?
will I research for the best materials to use
look at reviews on different sites
test/sample different materials out to see, for quality purpouse
well does my product perform its function
my product will be comfortable, relax the user, lightweight, cool on one side (hemp), warmer on the other side (velvet) ,pleasing to the eye
well do the additions help to improve the product
the alarm clock will ensure, that the user will not miss any flights/trains e.t.c
also ensures user not to become too stressed when travelling, as they know they can rely on the alarm clock to wake them up - so they do not miss anything
do you plan to model the mock-up of your design
use paper or muslin to give a more of a fabric view
test all elements
e.g. colours used, if the colours look how you expected on the design
e.g. fastenings - zips, popper button
WHY?
would i test which material would be best to use for my design
to understand if the material is truly comfortable
to undertsand if the material is actually how it is described e.g. hemp, is a cooling material and does not make you sweat
would i test the adittions for my design
to see if they actually work, e.g. zip
alarm clock - does it work, will it full out of design, is the best place to put alarm clock on side of the deisgn - should i move it to another place
popper button - is it needed, functional, worth it, does it help the neck pillow not fall of your neck, is button uncomfortable
finalise ideas?
make sure, that everything works well together e.g. colour combinations and additions used. Is the product what i expected, does the product perform its expected role
allows me to confirm that I am content with the design I will make and what I expect
allows me to narrow down ideas, to the options that benefit my design the most
avoiding any mistakes to occur whilst making the prototype
ensure the product fits the design specification
to provide clear instructions on project intent, performance and making of the product
so customer or user, will purchase what they expect
