Mesopotamian Empires

First Empires

Sumer began to decline because of war. Kingdoms rose in the North and in Syria. Kingdoms became empires, new empires brought cultures.

Who was Sargon

Sargon is ruler of Akkad, from the northern part of Mesopotamia. Over time, he took over city's from Sumer, and made the worlds first empire. Everyone is Mesopotamia had to live under Sargon's empire.

Who was Hammurabi?

Amorites lived in the west region of Mesopotamia. They conquered Mesopotamia. Hammurabi ruled the Babylonian Empire that stretched north from the Persian Gulf through the 2 rivers and West to Mediterranean sea.

Hammurabi's code

Hammurabi made this set of laws/code that covered all of his empire. The very strict code dealt with crimes, farming, business, marriage, and family. It was said "an eye for eye, and a tooth for tooth." If someone stole an apple, that wouldn't cost his life. This code also protected people with less power.

The Assyrian Empire

The Assyrian Empire was 1000 years after Hammurabi's. They had a very strong army, and they began taking over the rest of Mesopotamia.

The Assyrian Army

The Army of 50,000 soldiers, fought with slingshots, bows and arrows, swords, and spears. They were very mean and powerful. The Hittite people got really good at iron and Assyrians used iron now.

Kings and Government

They divided Empires into littler parts, or called provinces. They built roads to connect provinces. Soldiers had to stand on the side of the road to protect people from bandits.

Life In Assyria

They had law codes but their punishments were more brutal. The ruler Ashurbanipal built the first library with 25,000 tablets. They also had temples and palaces.

The Chaldean Empire

Fighting broke out on who would be the next Assyrian ruler. There were harsh rules so people often rebelled.

A New Empire

The Assyrians took over the small city of Chaldean, but then later on when Assyrians were in another battle, Chaldeans and the Medes broke away. Then, the two cities burned Assyria down to the ground and started their own empire.

The Greatness of Babylon

Babylon was getting really modern and civilized, like crazy things. The most crazy thing I thought was the king Nebuchadnezzar, built irrigation systems that led to the temple/ziggurat. It was a very pretty city. This was the first time that there was a ziggurat.

The Fall of the Empire

After king Nebuchadnezzar died, weak rulers ruled Chaldean. The Persians took over Chaldean and made Mesopatamia part of their empire.
