Sumer began to decline because of war. Kingdoms rose in the north and in Syria, kingdoms became empires, new empires brought new cultures
Sargon - Sargon was the leader of Akkad. In 2340 b.c, he moved his armies south, to concur the remaining Sumerian cities. After concurring all of the cities, the first empire was born. After creating an empire, Sargon extended it to include all of the peoples of Mesopotamia. His empire lasted for more then 200 years before invaders conquered it.
Hammurabi - After Sargon's empire, the Amorites conquered it and built their own cities, and Babylon was the greatest of the cities. Babylon was located on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River in what is know as Iraq.

Hammurabi´s code - Hammurabi was best known for creating laws for his empire, called Hammurabi´s code. The code dealt with crimes, farming business, marriage and the family, the code had a punishment for each crime. The punishment would be as bad as the crime.
Assyrian Empire - The Assyrian Empire arose about 1,000 years after the empire of Hammurabi. Assyrian was a big empire extending in Turkey, Syria, Iran and Iraq. The Assyrians began to take over Mesopotamia.
The Assyrian Army - In Battle the Assyrians numbered around 50,000 soldiers.This army was made up of infantry, or foot soldiers; cavalry, or horse men. The Assyrians fought with slingshots, bows and arrows, swords, and spears. The Assyrians destroyed crops towns and dams
Kings and Governments - The Assyrians extended from the Persian Gulf, into the east to the Nile River in the west. They divided the empire into provinces, or political districts.
Life in Assyria - The lives of the Assyrians were built on what they learned from other Mesopotamian people. The Assyrians had laws codes and punishments, but the punishments were harsher. Their writing was based of from Babylonian writing. The Assyrians built the worlds first library.
Life In Assyria - For 300 years, Assyria ruled the area from the Persian Gulf to Egypt. Because they were harsh rulers, people often rebelled. In about 650 b.c, fighting broke out over who would be the next Assyrian ruler. A group of people called the Chaldean took power.
A New Empire - The Chaldean people had moved into southern Mesopotamia. The Assyrians quickly concord the Chaldean's' small kingdom. Nabopolassar led a revolution against the Assyrians. Within a year they force the Assyrians out Uruk. Medes joined the Chaldeans to defeat the. They burnt the Assyrian capital to the ground. Nabopolassar and his son created a new empire. The Assyrian Empire quickly crumble. The Chaldeans took over almost all of what the Assyrains had ruled.
The Greatest Of Babylonia - King Nebuchadnezzar rebuilt Babylonia making it the richest and largest city. Grand palaces were built in the center of Babylon. A very big ziggrat stood more than 300 feet tall. When the sun shone, it's god roof could be seen from miles. The richness of the ziggrat was equaled by the kings palace. Babylon's Hanging Gardens were considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. These terraced gardens. Complex irrigation systems brought water from the Euphrates River to the gardens. It was believed that the king built the gardens to please the his Wife and remind her of her homeland. The king built a street for the people to see the palace.Each spring, thousands of people crowded into Babylon to watch a gold statue of the god Marduk as it was wheeled along the street. They built canals to make the land more fertile. Babylon grew wealthy from this trade. The Chaldeans, like other people in Mesopotamia, believed that the gods showed their plans in the changes in the sky.
The fall of an Empire - After Nebuchadnezzar died, a sires of weeks kings ruled the Chaldean Empire. Poor harvests and slow trade further weakened the empire. 539 they had realized that they had lost their power and leadership. The Persians took advantage and took over and made it a part of the Mesopotamian Empire. But the Persians wisely did not want to destroy all of the accomplishments the Babylonian Empire made.
