What makes the plates move?
Scientists think that 220 million years ago all the continents were joined together and called Pangaea
All of the continents fit together like a puzzle
The crust moves because of Convection Currents
There are similar rocks, deserts and fossils found where the continents would join
Under the plates there is a thick, soft, hot flowing rock (Mantle)
This shows that the super continent theory could be true
Conservative plate boundary
After a while, the pressure becomes too much which causes them to slip past each other
That then releases colossal amounts of energy which causes an Earthquake
They then get caught on each other and pressure then builds between them
Two separate plates slide past each other because of the friction of Convection Currents in the Mantle
Convergent or Destructive Boundaries
When they meet, the heavier Oceanic Plate will sink to the Mantle and melt (subduction)
When it melts, it releases energy, the crust then becomes molten magma which may be forced to the surface of the Earth
An Oceanic Plate collides with a Continental Plate
This then causes a Volcanic Eruption
Divergent or Constructive Boundaries
At a Constructive Plate Boundary, two plates move apart which causes magma to fill up the cracks, this causes a Volcano
The crust on each side of the boundary often have big cracks (faults) and if the boundary is underwater, it can form land
When plates move apart, the friction may cause small Earthquakes
