isolation and reduced movement between patches: loss of genetic diversity, inability to recolonise
local scale extinction through small population paradigm chance events, environmental changes, disturbances - landslides
but fragmentation does not consistently show negative impacts on species diversity. Impacts may be depend on: quality of matrix habitat, distance between patches in shorter, hunting preferences of predators, range-dependencies of affected species
