Types of Pain
Acute
- Short term
- Lasts hours or days
- Resolves with healing
Chronic
- Long lasting
- Affects patients quality of life
- Can be due to persistent inflammation and does not serve a biological or protective function
Neuropathic
- Injury or malfunction of nervous tissue
- Pins and needles type of sensation
- Burning, tingling, paresthesia
Treatment- 3 classes
Opioids
- Considered a controlled substance
- Most effective if it is given before pain starts
- Side effects include: respiratory depression, constipation, nausea etc.
- Morphine is a good example
Nonopioids - Acetaminophen (Tylenol) - NSAIDs (Asprin, ibuprofen etc.) - block prostiglandin(PG) synthesis by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes
Adjuvant
- Two products belonging to the same category should not be used at the same time
- used to amplify analgesic effect of pain meds
- Antidepressants
- Local anesthetics
