What is recycling?
Recycling involves reusing new materials (which would otherwise be thrown away) by collecting, processing, and repurposing/reusing them.
The internal recycling of materials is the re-use of waste products in another manufacturing process. Metals industries often recycle internally.
-
In external recycling, materials are reclaimed from old or obsolete products. Newspapers and magazines are examples of external recycling.
The common phrase “reduce, reuse, recycle” is famous for a reason because it summarizes the whole process in just a couple of words.
Reduce means to cut back on the amount of trash we generate. Reuse means to find new ways to use things that otherwise would have been thrown out!
What can be recycled?
You can recycle plastic, aluminum, cardboard, newspapers, batteries, and sometimes even glass.
-
For an item to be recyclable in your city, you need the following three things: technology must exist (to recycle the material), there must be a buyer, and the economics must work for the processor.
There are many things that can be recycled but there's also things that you CANNOT recycle like: appliances, bubble wrap, Christmas lights, coat hangers, plastic bags, and wood.
On many products usually on the bottom or the side of them, there is usually a recycle symbol! However there are quite a few of these recyclable symbols and they all mean something different.
How to recycle
-
You should always clean the plastic, glass, and aluminum bottles you recycle. One dirty product can contaminate a whole bale. Which can cause the recyclable items to get redirected into a landfill.
There are three main ways to collect materials: buyback centers, which buy waste materials sorted and brought in by consumers; drop-off centers, where consumers can drop off waste materials without being paid; and curbside collection, where homes and businesses sort their waste materials and deposit them at the curb for collection by a central agency.
-
When shopping, look for products made from recycled materials. A triangle containing three green arrows indicates that the product can be recycled. Sometimes, the triangle will have a percentage showing how much was recycled.
Why should you recycle?
Recycling prevents and reduces air and water pollution, it conserves energy, it reduces greenhouse gasses, and it conserves natural resources.

Recycling also helps create well-paying jobs. A study in 2016 found that recycling and reuse activities in the United States accounted for 757,000 jobs.
