OLIVER TWIST
Story
tells the story of Oliver, a poor boy who knows nothing of his parents and for this he is taken to a workhouse, then he is sold to an undertaker but being treated badly he escapes to London where he joins a gang of pickpockets led by Fagin. On his first outing with the gang Oliver was arrested but Mr Brownlow, who is the man who was being robbed, took him home with him. The gang found out where Oliver was and kidnapped him forcing him to rob inside a house. Here Oliver was shot and hurt but escaped by returning to Mr Brownlow. Then Oliver discovers that he comes from a respectable family but his half-brother had tried to get him out so as not to divide the inheritance, also paying Fagin to make Oliver a thief.
Et the end Oliver gets his inheritance and the criminals are punished

HARD TIMES
Story
tells the story of a teacher Thomas Gradgrind who teaches only facts to children, also adopting this method with his daughter and son.

Mr Gradgrind pushed his daughter to marry a rich banker, Bounderby, her daughter accepted because she wanted to help her brother in her career. Thanks to this the brother got a job in Bounderby's bank but sometimes he stole money.
When he was discovered he ran away to the circus which is described as kind and nice to protect him.Et the end Mr Gradgrind saw the damage of his materialist philosophy.

From a thematic point of view we can say that it is a critique of materialism and utilitarianism and highlights the distance between rich and poor.
