Government
What is government?
An organization set up by the people to protect the community and make rules.
There is a leader or leaders in charge.
There are rules/laws to follow.
Forms of government
Theocracy
The laws often come from the holy books/texts that the religion that the culture follows.
The leader is thought to serve his divine right and represent god on earth.
A form of government where a god or gods is the supreme ruler.
Dictatorship/Tyranny
Some tyrants make their supporters happy and help the poor to not be overthrown.
The tyrant/dictator may use force or control to keep/stay in power.
The tyrant/dictator has complete control over citizens and their lives.
The leader has not been elected/has “fake” elections.
Ruled by a single leader known as a dictator or a tyrant.
Democracy/Republic

People vote on every issue
Only practical in a small community
Different from governments controlled by a particular social class or group.
The people elect the government. Everyone who is eligible to vote has a chance to have their say over who runs the country.
Oligarchy
Oligarchs only care for themselves
The decisions they make benefit only themselves and “make the rich richer and the poor poorer.”
It is a government in which only a few people have power.

Types of monarchies
Constitutional
: A democratic government rules alongside the monarchy to limit their control.
Traditional
: The monarch has absolute power
Royal family
: the ruling position can be passed on to the ruler's children
Ruled by a monarch
: King/Queen or Emperor/Empress
Other Forms of Government
Anarchy
No government
Disorderly and chaotic
Usually occurs after a government falls and another one begins
Communism
What does the government do?
Protects the community.
Keeps and maintains order and peace.
Does this by creating laws and enforcing it.
Collects taxes to take care of services.

Military
Schools
Why do we need government?
They make rules to maintain order,
Protects people and their property.
Enforcing law to ensure safety,.
To have someone in charge of schools, military, etc.
Without it, there would be disorder and chaos.
Who has authority in a government?
The leader, which is usually a king/queen, prime minister, president, or emperor.
Typically, the people elect their leader by voting.
