SELF, DEATH AND AFTERLIFE
-
RESSURECTION
-
All 4 gospel narratives say that on the third day after Jesus' death, the tomb was found to be empty
Through the power of God, Jesus overcame the power of death
St Paul - supports the idea of a spiritual resurrection where he says that what is seen as a physical body, is raised spiritual body
1 Corinthians - 15:42-44 - St Paul 'it is sown a natural body , it is raised in a spiritual one
-
Plato - Spiritual resurrection believed by Plato + his idea of dualistic philosophy, where a person is essentially a non-material soul housed in a physical body
-
Augustine's view formed the basis of the teaching of the Catholic church today - 'the world has come to the belief that the earthly body of Christ was received up into heaven'
AFTER LIFE
-
The classic idea of judgement was the idea that at the end of time, the dead who had been sleeping in their graves would be awoken by the sound of a trumpet + Christ would come again in glory seated on a throne with angels surrounding him
-
Those who carried out sinful acts that were unforgiveable would be sent to hell to suffer burning, pain + torture
Purgatory - if sins were forgivable (venial sins) then they would undergo a period of time in a state of suffering to cleanse them of evil (purgatory) to then be accepted into heaven
Orthodox Churches of the East = 40 days after death there will be a particular judgement of each individual Christian, when God will decide where the soul will wait until the second coming of Christ. Then there will be a 'general' judgement where dead bodies will rise
Judgement as physical - once dead body arises it is believed that they will actually psychically suffer if sent to Hell
When these doctrines were being developed people were much more aware of the reality of death than people are today
Many deaths during childbirth/children dying from diseases + no anaesthetics so people back then faced alot more physical pain
Because of all this, the description of pain and suffering within The Bible lead people to believe in the literal reality of the 'eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels' as a punishment for sin
The Church hoped that by forcing suffering of sinners after death, they would deter people from committing sins e.g. 'Black Plague' was taught to be a punishment from God for human sin
Presence of a doom painting in most Churches serve as a reminder to people that they will face judgement
Judgement as spiritual - Modern thought, bodily resurrection is not so much widely held - spiritually resurrected souls may be subject to eternal life with God or eternal suffering apart from God in Hell
Qualities of heaven aren't material, they are spiritual e.g. joy, peace, love + the pleasure of being reunited with loved ones
Qualities of Hell = spiritual lost, no source of goodness separation from God + Loved ones
Judgement = final destination of each soul + afterlife beings with judgement and eternity in a spiritual hell/heaven
Judgement as a psychological reality - Many Christians today believe that all of the notions of resurrection and Heaven/Hell are out of date
