How does radiation poisoning work and what is the damage that is made in humans?
How does nuclear radiation poisoning work?
Nuclear bombs release ionizing radiation: gamma and neutron
How does nuclear radiation affect the human body?
Ionizing radiation is a type of radiation that gives off energy
Gamma and neutron radiation waves are small enough that they can pass through cell walls and alter cell and DNA composition by giving off energy
Effects of radiation
ARS: All people with Acutre Radiation Syndrome (ARS) go through four stages, that also parallel the amount of damage a person sustains according to the amount of radiation they receive
Death
Latency
The latent phase is a transitional period in which the patient is asymptomatic. This may last as long as 3 weeks, but is much shorter with higher radiation exposures.
Prodrome
The prodromal phase occurs within hours of exposure and may last for up to 2 days.
Symptoms are a function of the total rad dose and include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, respiratory distress, and agitation. Treatment should be symptomatic.
Illness
The illness phase produces overt clinical manifestations, including infection because of leukopenia, bleeding from thrombocytopenia, diarrhea, electrolyte imbalances, altered mental status, and shock.
ARS usually involves such a large external radiation exposure that it includes cutaneous radiation injury (CRI)
Skin problems at the CRI site can reemerge in months and years following recovery and may include skin cancer.
Incidents
Hisashi Ouichi
While mixing enriched uraium withnitric acid in a power lpant to generate nuclear fuel, sometihng went wrong, and the mixture shined bright blue. He was discharged a high dose of radiation.
He absorbed in seconds the amount of radiation equivalent of that of the epicenter of the hiroshima bomb, which is thousands of times the averagae annual dose for humans.

Demon Core
In 1945 and 1946, several experiments were made with the plutonium core, which was initially meant to be the power source of a third nuclear bomb
It consisted of a plutonium sphere made up of two hemispheres which under any condition could not have direct contact. It was surrounded by lead bricks, which reflected the radiation towards te core, making it go critical if the two hemispheres touched each other

Howard Kakita
He is a survivor from the hiroshima bomb
His son died of cancer at the age of 5 but the doctors said there was no correlation between Howard's exposure and his son's death
He stated that people's skin melted from their bodies and the streets were full of dead bodies
