Part 3 General Discussion
Human cloning
Opinion
Beneficial
Could save lifes
Could cause harm
Harm to the clones, baby could be defect
The clones' rights
Ethics
Playing god, by creating and manipulating lives
high rates of abortions, stillbirths, and developmental abnormalities in embryos created through reproductive cloning
Cloning could also disrupt genetic diversity and inherently affect the gene pool. Genetic diversity in a population is important for developing resistance to certain diseases and adapting to an ever changing environment.
Clones would face their own issues in their identity, rights, and individuality. Cloned individuals might face discrimination and not be accepted into mainstream society.
Countries
Malaysia
Against human cloning but encourage the research on the subject, except for the therapeutic cloning from embryos to generate stem cells
Anglophone
UK
Bans human reproductive cloning, but allows therapeutic research
US
Actively research but not medically practiced.
Organ Donation
Anglophone countries
UK
The Opt Out System
it will be considered that citizens agree to become an organ donor when they die, if:
The proportion of the population ‘opting-in’ to the organ donation register has gradually increased, to 40 percent of the UK population in the period 2020/21.
US
The majority of Americans—95% are in favor of organ donation. But only 58% are actually registered.
The Opt In System
A registered individual provides legally binding permission for donation at the time of death, and family does not have the right to override this decision
Malaysia
A living donor can only donate one kidney or part of the liver
Malaysia continues to have a very low
cadaveric organ donation rate of 0.48 per million population
The Opt In System, need to sign up for it to become a donor.
