Do you notice your student struggling?
No
Yes
They are struggling socially/emotionally
I have not yet attempted to differentiate instruction for this student
First try to differentiate instruction based on the student's specific needs and weakness. Different examples of differentiating instruction can include:
Creating a social story to read to the child based on their individual needs
Keeping visual cards to use whenever interacting with the student
Teaching social and emotional based lessons to the class
Having a calming corner in the room for the student to go to whenever they need a break
Modeling how to properly communicate and interact with others
I have already attempted to differentiate instruction for this student
Reach out to a professional such as a social worker, school psychologist, etc. to come in and model social and emotional lessons for the student
The student begins to progress once you are able to consistently teach the lessons as modeled
The student still does not progress
Reach out to the professional again and ask them to observe the student in the classroom
The professional recommends that the child receive specific support/accommodations
Put in a referral for the child to receive specific accommodations based on the professional's advice
The professional does not believe the child requires specific support/accommodations
Ask the professional how you can differentiate instruction to best fit the child's needs
They are struggling academically
