Human body - Coggle Diagram
Human body
Levels of organization
Tissue
- A group or layer of cells that work together to perform a specific function
Organs
- A part of an organism that is typically self-contained and has a specific vital function
Cells
- The smallest structural and functional unit of an organism
Organ system
- A group of organs that work together to perform a certain function in an organism's body
Muscular System
Parts
Muscles,Tendons
Skeletal
- Voluntary: Connected to the bones
Cardiac
- Involuntary: Found in the heart
Tendon
- Connects the bones to the muscles
Smooth
- Involuntary: Found in the digestive tract
Other Systems: Skeletal, Nervous, Circulatory, Digestive
Function: Movement
Skeletal System
Parts
Ligaments
- Connects the bones to other bones
Cartilage
- Firm, white (ears nose)
Bones
- Compact, Spongy
Function:Supports the body, Storage, Homeostasis, Movement, Makes blood for the body
Other System:
Circulatory: Makes red blood cells for the body
Muscular: movement
Respiratory system
parts
Larynx
: the hollow muscular organ forming an air passage to the lungs and holding the vocal cords
Pharynx
: the membrane-lined cavity behind the nose and mouth, connecting them to the esophagus
Aveoli
: any of the many tiny air sacs of the lungs which allow for rapid gaseous exchange
Lungs
: One of a pair of organs in the chest that supplies the body with oxygen, and removes carbon dioxide from the body
Bronchitis
: common lung infection in young children and infants
Nasal Cavity
: that space inside your nose that filters air into your lungs
Diaphragm
: contracts and flattens and the chest cavity enlarges
Epiglottis
: a flap of cartilage at the root of the tongue that prevents drinks and food from coming in the windpipe
Bronchi
: any of the major air passages of the lungs which diverge from the windpipe
Trachea
: a large membranous tube reinforced by rings of cartilage that carries air to your lungs
Function: Allows us to breath
Other Systems: lymphatic system, immune system, nervous system
Circulatory system
Blood vessel
: transport nutrients to organs/tissues and to transport wastes away from organs/tissues in the blood
Heart
: pumping blood around your body as your heart beats
Blood
: transporting oxygen and nutrients to the lungs and tissues
Function: carries oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to cells, and removes waste products
Other System: Respiratory System
Digestive system
Function: move food and liquid through your GI tract, break food and liquid into smaller parts, or both
Parts
Small Intestine
- helps to further digest food coming from the stomach
Large Intestine
- to absorb water and salts from the material that has not been digested as food, and get rid of any waste products
Stomach
- takes in food from the esophagus mixes it, breaks it down, and then passes it on to the small intestine in parts
Rectum
- to receive stool from the colon, let you know that there is stool to be evacuated
Esophagus
- transport food entering the mouth through the throat and into the stomach
Mouth
- eating and speaking
Anus
- where stool comes out of the body
other systems: salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas
Urinary System
Parts
Ureters
- carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder
Bladder
- stores urine
Kidneys
- to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body
Urethra
- empties urine from the bladder
Function: to filter blood and create urine as a waste by-product
Other Systems: blood vessels and digestive system
Immune System
Parts
Skin
: the body's largest organ, made of water, protein, fats and minerals.
Bone Marrow
: The soft, spongy tissue that has many blood vessels and is found in the center of most bones.
Vessels
: A tube through which the blood circulates in the body.
Thymus
: a small organ that lies in the upper chest under the breastbone.
Spleen
: an abdominal organ involved in the production and removal of blood cells in most vertebrates and forming part of the immune system.
Lymph Nodes
: A small bean-shaped structure that is part of the body's immune system.
Function: protects your body from harmful substances, germs and cell changes that could make you ill
Other systems: organ and tissue
Endocrine System
Parts
Parathyroid
- regulates calcium levels in a person's body.
Thymus
- a lymphoid organ situated in the neck of vertebrates that produces T cells for the immune system
Thyroid
- a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck, just below the Adam's apple
Adrenal Glands
- A small gland that makes steroid hormones, adrenaline.
Pituitary
- controlling growth and development and the functioning of the other endocrine glands.
Ovaries
- a female reproductive organ in which ova or eggs are produced
Testes
- an organ which produces spermatozoa
Pancreas
- a large gland behind the stomach which secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum
Function: release hormones into the bloodstream
Other Systems: nervous system and the immune system
reproductive system
Parts
Vagina
-the muscular tube leading from the external genitals to the cervix of the uterus in women and most female mammals.
Penis
- the male genital organ of higher vertebrates, carrying the duct for the transfer of sperm during copulation
Uterus
-the organ in the lower body of a woman or female mammal where offspring are conceived and in which they gestate before birth; the womb.
Testes
- an organ which produces spermatozoa
Ovaries
-a female reproductive organ in which ova or eggs are produced
Prostate
- a gland surrounding the neck of the bladder in male mammals and releasing prostatic fluid.
Function: to produce egg and sperm cells
Other Systems: nervous, endocrine, excretory, and circulatory systems
Nervous system
Parts
Nerves
: carry electrical impulses between your brain and the rest of your body
Spinal cords
: send motor commands from the brain to the body, send sensory information from the body to the brain
Brain
: controls thought, memory, emotion, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, hunger and every process that regulates our body
Other Systems: excretory and digestive systems
Function: transmits signals between the brain and the rest of the body, including internal organs
