- - - - Optimism: Optimism is a state of mind. When it comes to players and the team in general, I always have a sense that if we work hard enough and smart enough we can accomplish great things. This also entails having a general positive attitude.

        Coaching Standards
        
        Coaches should take every opportunity to model and teach players about our Core Values: respect, loyalty, responsibility, self-discipline and cooperation.
        
        Coaches must set the highest priority on working and developing as a team.
        
        Coaches must act responsibly and professionally.
        
        Do not use the "F" word around Athletes and Managers
        
        Never undermine or speak negatively of any coaches on the football staff.
        
        Isolate the Skills and Techniques that are essential to each position
        
        All Coaches will wear official IFA coaching shirts/hats and no other previous school attire will be appropriate on game days.
        
        Discipline: We must keep our composure and set a good example for our players. If we can’t control our emotions-how can we ask them to?
        
        Player Standards: Hold your players to the highest standards
        
        Be Personable with your players, but not too familiar. If they see you as more of a friend than an authority figure- you will lose their respect and thereby limit their potential.
        
        Be Natural: Be natural with your athletes, minding your position as their leader. Any attempt to do otherwise will appear as Phony
        
        Opponent Respect: Always fear your opponents just enough to keep you sharp. Never convey to your athletes how bad the other team might be- you are setting us up to lose. Prepare for their best!
        
        All Players, regardless of ability, name, or connections will be treated with respect equally. We will treat them as an individual worthy of our best.
        
        Communications
        
        The Press: Dealing with the press is the sole responsibility of the Head Coach. Assistant Coaches: Our coaching conversations about players, strategy or any other aspect of the football program that are negative are strictly off limits to the press. Conversations about players that are not complementary, should also remain in confidence.
        
        Coaches
        
        Coaches Meetings: In order to have an open, uninhibited exchange of ideas, all coaches must be respectful of everyone’s ideas and opinions.
        
        The Head Coach will make himself available for assistants to discuss any problems or differences of opinion.
        
        Assistant Coaches must understand that the head coach is receptive to their ideas, but if the decision is made, no matter what that decision is, they have to get behind it. This situation can become impossible if both sides don’t make an effort to cultivate a positive relationship.
        
        If an assistant coach feels there is a an ethical question, it should be brought to the attention of the Head Coach Immediately.
        
        Approachability: It is the goal of this head coach, to make sure all the members of the program know that they are being heard.
        
        Parents: Be honest with parents about the ability of their son/daughter. Do not engage in criticizing anyone; players, managers or coaches in the Football Program.
        
        All communications to the athletes, outside of tactical football operations, will be communicated to the parents. We will always assume it won't get home unless we directly communicate it to both athletes and parents in that email group.
        
        Players: It is critical that players feel that they are being heard by the coaches and that they feel comfortable asking questions. We are dependent on the information they bring from the field and we want them to feel like we are listening to them- even if we disagree with their assessment. It is important that they be heard.

        Participation
        
        Renewed Hope: I think the majority of the community and the student body, because of the success of the HS Track Program and the MS Football Program, believe that we will be successful.
        
        Excitement: I think the program is going to be a lot more exciting and not just because we are going to win, but a more dynamic practice/game environment. Your best advocates of your program are what the kids are telling their friends.

        Relationships: I have relationships with a lot of the players through Track & Field and Middle School Football
        
        Passion: I believe that the passion I have for football and Iowa Falls-Alden will generate excitement for the program which will lead to greater numbers.
        
        Motivation: The ability to motivate players and encouraging them to believe in themselves will attract more athletes to the program.
        
        Schedule our Pre-Season practices so the kids that have to work can be out for Football.

        Games: All Players will have their shirts tucked in and an appropriate shirt color for their under shirt: Black: Black Jerseys, White: White Jerseys.
        
        Players will arrive to games, practices and meetings on time. On time means in your seat or on the field and ready to pay attention and be engaged.
        
        Players are expected to treat all Coaches, Managers, Trainers and fellow players with respect. Any physical or mental abuse of anyone in the Football Program will not be tolerated.
        
        Players are expected to be in a good stance for every rep in practice and in games.
        
        Players are expected to treat all officials with respect. When speaking to officials address them as sir.
        
        Players will know their assignments as assigned by their position coaches.
        
        Players are encouraged and expected to ask questions about assignments they do not understand.
        
        Players are expected to be in good academic standing.
        
        Players are expected to hustle at all times: Practice & Games. We don't walk on the field of play nor in practice.
        
        Run every play as close to perfection as possible in practice and in games.
        
        Players should take great pride in their performance during practice- exerting maximum effort at all times.
        
        One Standing Order: Fight! We are going to train these kids to become fighters- to look forward to tougher competition
        
        Program Standard: Teamwork amongst Coaches, Players and Managers is critical! (Mentioned twice for a reason)
        
        Job Descriptions: Making sure every job is clearly spelled out and the responsibilities that go with it.
      - Perfection: By striving for perfection, knowing you can never achieve it, you raise yourself notches above where you might have been content to be. Setting the bar any lower will just result in lower levels of success. Lombardi: “We don’t do things right part of the time, we do things right all of the time.”
      - Boldness: When Rice plays Texas, if they both do the same things- Texas wins every time. In some circumstances, we have to be bold in our play calling in all three facets of the game to overcome when the other team has advantages: depth, strength, speed, talent….
      - Quest for Knowledge: You have to continually search out new information & techniques, not jumping from one philosophy to another, but searching for those rare ideas that can enhance your systems and techniques. Your level of expertise must remain dynamic.
      - Keeping it Simple: Our focus will be on using language and terminology that is easy to understand and not on following the latest buzz words. We need to be focused on the things that will enable the greatest understanding for our players. Simplicity & Understanding= Faster Game speed.
      - Discipline: We must keep our composure and set a good example for our players. If we can’t control our emotions-how can we ask them to?
      - Being a Teacher: You can’t just tell them that it is so, you have to show them why it is so. That way they understand what you’re trying to teach them. If they understand why they are doing things they will be more likely to do it that way.
      - Be Yourself: Kids can spot a phony a mile away and you will never earn their respect by being their buddy or sucking up to them. It’s ok to use humor, as long as it’s used appropriately. Be genuine, don’t play to the crowd or try to look more important than you are.
      - Hard Work: The fastest way to gain respect is by working hard and being prepared. Being committed to excellence and holding high standards.
      - Attention to Detail: Be very specific in setting the standards for your players. Example: the ball should be placed 12 inches in front of the receiver’s numbers.
      - Be Organized: Plan out your group times so that you make use of every minute for improving the skills of your players. Players and coaches will give great respect for not wasting time.
      - Be an Effective Leader: When you make a decision, be decisive- after you have thought through it and come to that conclusion through intelligence and integrity. Be an expert in your field. Treat others with respect and fairness, regardless of economic or social circumstances.
      - Be Accountable: You must take responsibility for matters to which you are in charge. Head Coach: Even matters to which you were not responsible -it shows weakness if you blame others Example: your players and coaches. At the same time, hold your players accountable to the skills and techniques you prepared for.
      - Be Focused: Keep the Program & Team at the front of your focus and not your own personal ambitions. Example: Rank in District for Offense.
      - Be Ethical: Practice your value system daily: don’t teach kids to cheat, win at any cost- because in the end there is no victory without honor. If we are using the skills and fundamentals we need to teach, we won’t need to cheat.
      - Passion: Passion is the number one characteristic of a coach that can raise the level of play of an athlete.
      - Be Positive: Tell players they did a good job when you feel they did something special or they need a boost! Use good judgement.
