Migration is a way of escaping to start a new life
Migration can lead to better education or job opportunities
Some people move in search of work or economic opportunities, to join family, or to study.
Still others move in response to the adverse effects of climate change, natural disasters, or other environmental factors.
Others move to escape conflict, persecution, terrorism, or human rights violations.
Migration can lead to a stronger economy because there is more labor available
Intention
I would like to create a piece of theatre that focuses on different aspects and feelings that students feel when migrating for the first time, such as feeling scared to be alone but excited to explore a new country/city. I want to show the effects of casual racism against Asians when they enter a different country for school as it is something very prominent yet not openly combated so the issue keeps worsening. I will show this through a 3-act play and in that I want to speak about the ups and downs of moving out for school. I will show the excitement to experience new places in the first act, then scared to be alone in the second and then racist remarks from other students to show the effects of racism. My audience is students and teachers as they can help stop these issues for new students.
Impact
The piece of theatre will demonstrate the impact of migration on a student that is leaving their country on their own for the first time to pursue higher education. I want the audience to feel joy, excitement, scared, vulnerable and any emotions that someone on their own for the first time ever would feel. I want them to think about their own similar experiences and relate with the character along with think about the challenges the character faces. I want them to be able to relate, help and understand college/transfer students and how they feel when they are alone for the first time after migrating outside of their home for school.
Theatre Artist Process
Wayne Brady, as an improv actor, would play theatre games to bring out the problems of migration such as asking the audience for a prompt which can be a certain country that he is migrating to and then he can come up with an act on the spot to show the feelings he would have in that specific situation.
