WATER POLLUTION AND THE GREAT GARBAGE PATCH
pollution is the introduction of pollutants into the enviroment at a rate faster than the enviroment can dispose of them
result of natural disasters
human activities
industrial waste
urban areas are more polluted than countryside
pollution si a global problem
Water pollution;
Air pollution;
Soil pollution;
Noise pollution;
Light pollution
Types of pollution:
pollution can spread to remote pleaces where no pleople live
in the middle of the northern Pacific Ocean, there is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
a huge collectionof microscopic plastic particles
air and water currents and migrating fish carry pollution
winds can pick up
radioactive material accidentally
Water pollution is the contamination of water resources.
when pollutants are discharged directly or indirectly into water without enough treatment to get rid of harmful substances
Water sources:
Surface waters
Ground water
Both of them can get
polluted
Causes:
Sewage
Water is usually polluted by the waste waters by using any sort of chemicals that are then poured down drains and toilets and finally
discharged in the oceans
Waste waters
sewage contains different types ofchemicals: drugs, paper, plastic and other wastes that people flush down their toilets
It is possible to catch hepatitis, cholera and
typhoid from river and sea water
Oil pollution
Oil spill represent only a tiny fraction of the pollution of an ocean
Oil spills often cause the death of marine plants and animals and affect several links in
the food chain.
plastics
Plastic is one on the main causes of water
pollution because:
It is one of the most common materials;
It is light so it floats easily and can travel long
distances across the oceans;
It can survive for a long time;
It represents a danger for seabirds, fish and
other marine creatures.
The plastic islands are formed by waste of various sizes,
but above all by billions of microscopic fragments of plastic that mix and blend with the plactons
therefore every year many marine animals die due to plastic objects that they eat by mistake or that they trap
