FOR THE RIGHTS OF BLACK AMERICANS:
Week 14 | How Should We Be? Two Movements for Rights C3
CREATE TENSION, OR BE VIOLENT?
"Oppressed peo[ple cannot remain oppressed forever. The yearning for freedom eventually manifests istelf, and that all is what has happened to the American Negro"
Martin Luther, Letter from Birmingham Jail
"You bleed for white people, but when it comes to seeing your own churches being bombed and little black girls murdered, you haven't got any blood. You bleed when the white man says bleed; you bite when the white man says bite;...How are you going to be nonviolent in Mississippi, as violent as you were in Korea?"
Malcom X, Message to Grassroots
Both shared equal concern for racial equality, economic inequality/poverty, opposition to the war, and for injustice. However, they disagreed on the steps towards their goals. Martin wanted to bring about more protests, but Malcom X brings a far stronger point, that violence is the next step.
